Gutters are the part of a roof nobody thinks about until water is running down the wall. They are also the part that fails quietly: a run loses its fall over a few winters, a join opens up, and nothing looks wrong until the first heavy downpour sends water over the front lip and into the fascia. Is It Time to Replace Your Gutters? Five Warning Signs

You do not need to get on the roof to spot most of these. A walk around the house during and just after rain tells you nearly everything.

1. Rust streaks, pinholes, or flaking. Look at the inside face of the gutter and at the joins. Surface rust on old galvanised or steel guttering is the beginning of the end - once it is through the metal, patching only buys months.
2. Sagging runs and brackets pulling away. A gutter that dips in the middle has either lost brackets or is hanging off softened fascia timber. Either way the fall is gone and water sits in it.
3. Water still in the gutter days after rain. A correctly pitched gutter drains and dries. Standing water means the fall has flattened out, which accelerates corrosion from the inside.
4. Joins that have been silicone-patched more than once. Sealant is a repair, not a fix. If the same join has been done twice, the metal around it has usually moved or thinned.
5. Overflow during moderate rain, straight after a clean. If it was cleared last month and it still overflows, the problem is the gutter, not the leaves.

Soft or rotting fascia timber behind the gutter is the sixth sign, and the most expensive one to ignore. Once water has been running behind the gutter line for a season or two, the timber is doing the absorbing.

Gutter Replacement vs Gutter Cleaning - How to Tell the Difference

This is the question we get asked most, and the honest answer is that from the ground the two problems look identical. Both overflow. The difference is what is causing the overflow.

If the guttering is structurally sound and simply full of leaf litter, you need a gutter clean, which starts from $350 inc GST for a single-storey home. If the metal is corroded, the fall is gone, or the run is hanging off the fascia, cleaning it changes nothing - the water will be back over the edge at the next downpour.

How Much Does Gutter Replacement Cost in Canberra?

A full gutter replacement in Canberra typically ranges from $6,500 to $10,500 (inc GST) for a single-storey home. That covers removing the old guttering, supplying and installing new Colorbond gutters, and connecting the downpipes.

Where a job lands in that range comes down to four things:

• Lineal metres of guttering. A typical single-storey Canberra home on a standard block carries 30 to 50 lineal metres. Hip roofs and complex perimeters carry considerably more.
• Profile and colour. Quad, Half-Round, and OG each price differently, and the full Colorbond colour range is available.
• Number of downpipes. These are priced per run rather than per metre, because the work is in the connection to your stormwater.
• Access and storey height. Double and triple-storey runs need more setup. That is quoted upfront rather than added at the end.

Which Gutter Profile Is Right for My Home?

Three profiles cover almost every Canberra home, and the right one is usually decided by the age and style of the house rather than by performance.

• Quad. The square-backed, curved-front profile you see on most established ACT suburbs and nearly every project home. High capacity, straightforward to fit, available with or without a slotted overflow front.
• Half-Round. A rounded profile that suits period and heritage-style homes in the inner south. It sheds debris more readily than square profiles because there is no internal corner for leaf litter to pack into.
• OG (Old Gothic). A moulded, decorative front face used on traditional and reproduction homes where the roofline is part of the look.

Capacity matters more than appearance on a steep or large roof: the gutter has to carry what the roof sheds in a downpour, and that is a calculation off roof area and pitch, not a preference. We work it out at the estimate and tell you if the profile you like will not keep up.

Why Canberra's Climate Is Hard on Gutters

Canberra ages guttering faster than most Australian cities, and the culprit is the freeze-thaw cycle. Water left sitting in a gutter overnight through June and July freezes, expands, and works at every join, seam, and bracket. Repeat that a few hundred times and the joins open, the fall flattens, and the brackets loosen.

On top of that we get long dry spells followed by sudden heavy rain. A gutter that has quietly lost its fall has no spare capacity when it finally rains hard, so the first real downpour of the season is when the problem announces itself - usually as water behind the gutter rather than over the front of it.

Leaf load makes it worse. Eucalypts shed year-round, and the established suburbs add a heavy deciduous autumn fall on top. Debris dams the run, holds water against the metal, and in a bushfire-prone territory a gutter packed with dry leaf litter is an ember trap as well as a water problem.

What Happens on the Day - Our Replacement Process

Most single-storey homes are done in one to two days once materials are on site.

1. Set up and strip out. The old guttering, brackets, and fixings come off. They leave with us - nothing gets stacked in the yard.
2. Check the fascia. With the gutter off, the timber behind it is visible for the first time in years. If there is rot, you hear about it then, with a photo, not after the new gutter is on.
3. Install. New gutters fixed at the correct bracket spacing and pitched to fall towards the downpipe outlets, with the joins sealed properly rather than smeared.
4. Downpipes and stormwater. New or re-routed downpipes connected to the existing stormwater, sized for the roof area they drain.
5. Flow test and clean-up. We run water through the whole system, check every join and outlet, clear the site, and photograph the finished work.

Should You Add Gutter Guards at the Same Time?

If you have eucalypts, pines, or deciduous trees anywhere near the house, this is worth a serious look. New gutters fill with leaves exactly as fast as old ones did, and the crew is already at the roof edge with the mesh line accessible - so fitting guards now means one visit instead of two.

We install quality aluminium and steel mesh, mechanically fixed with proper under-flashing so the mesh cannot lift in wind, colour-matched to the new gutters. Ember-rated options are available for BAL 12.5 and above, which covers a good deal of the ACT's bushfire-prone fringe.

Guards reduce how often the gutters need clearing. They do not eliminate it - fine grit and broken-down leaf matter still needs periodic attention, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling.

Behind every gutter is a timber fascia board, and along your gable ends a timber barge board. Both sit exposed to Canberra frost, rain, and high-altitude UV, and both are the first thing to rot once a gutter has been overflowing for a while.
